Welcome to The Severals. Our home dates from the 1780’s and is located at the foot of the Downs close to the village of South Harting. It is set, on its own, in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the South Downs National Park and is around a 30 minute walk from the South Downs Way, which can be seen from the house.
The house was originally a gamekeeper’s cottage and from descriptions in his memoirs it is known that HG Wells wrote letters from here when his father lived here and his mother was Housekeeper at Uppark House.
The house, approximately one hour’s drive or train from London, is ideally situated for Cowdray Park Polo events and the world-famous Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Goodwood revival meeting, and Glorious Goodwood. Close by are Chichester and Guildford, both renowned for their cathedrals and theatres, and the picturesque market towns of Midhurst, Petworth and Petersfield. Portsmouth and its historic naval dockyard is 30 minutes away and the Isle of Wight and Osborne House are within striking distance for a day trip. Also worth a visit are Uppark House and Garden, Arundel, Gilbert White’s House at Selborne and Jane Austen’s Museum at Chawton, Alton.
We are approximately a 20 minute walk from the foot of the Downs and half an hour from the South Down's Way. We are happy to pick up and drop off walkers at an agreed spot by prior arrangement. Bicycles can be locked away safely in our bicycle shed.
For those who are touring by car, there is plenty of off-road parking in front of the house. There are two pubs providing evening and lunchtime meals in South Harting and a good selection of lovely pubs in the nearby villages of Elsted and Compton. There are several excellent restaurants in Petersfield which is four miles away.

A delightful place to stay in an idyllic spot. Perfect for exploring the South Downs! The room itself exceeded expectations, as did the attentive welcome of the hosts. Looking forward to my next visit.
My husband, daughter and I loved our time at The Severals. Gracious hosts who couldn't be more helpful, very private and beautifully decorated room, amazing breakfasts and those spectacular views the Downs. We'll be back for sure.
We had a lovely stay in this beautiful family farmhouse. The area and all it has to offer is wonderful, fabulous walks and lovely country pubs - perfect for us. We will definitely visit again. Thank you.
